TSF BACKLOT - PARIS STREETS

TSF BACKLOT – PARIS STREETS is a versatile set platform that recreates iconic Parisian streets, offering directors, cinematographers, and production designers the freedom to craft their own unique worlds. It allows seamless integration of custom sets tailored to the specific demands of each script. The authenticity of the sets closely mirrors the globally recognized charm of Paris.

This Parisian backlot is an essential tool today to meet the high national and international demand for filming in Paris. It offers all types of productions viable shooting solutions in a Paris that has become increasingly difficult to access : high demand, security constraints, budget limitations, confidentiality, external noise disturbances, inconvenience to local residents, and compensation for businesses.

The permanent Paris streets set allows productions to create custom sets while benefiting from a sustainable and environmentally responsible infrastructure. It is the preferred choice for urban shoots with a Parisian ambiance.

THE PARIS STREETS BACKLOT FAITHFULLY CAPTURES PARISIAN ARCHITECTURE AND ATMOSPHERE

Three Types of Façades

Three distinct façade styles have been selected in the design of the Paris Streets backlot, representing different iconic Parisian neighborhoods and offering a wide range of configurations for set layouts and filming.

  • Luxury façades: Designed for Paris’s upscale neighborhoods, featuring Haussmann-style architecture, reminiscent of Paris’s western districts (7th, 8th, 16th arrondissements), and the Grand Boulevards.
  • Mid-range façades: Representing the 9th and 10th arrondissements, capturing a more intimate neighborhood feel.
  • Simple façades or workshops: A blend of styles inspired by areas like Belleville, the outskirts, or close suburbs.

A Wide Range of Perspectives and Spaces

In designing Backlot 77, the goal was to blend these three façade styles and create an intelligent interaction between two main areas: the Grand Boulevard and the streets. This interaction allows for fluid transitions between the various settings across the entire backlot. The layout of the Backlot 77 “Paris Streets” set was also designed to offer a multitude of perspectives: from the Grand Boulevard to the streets, from the streets back to the boulevard, from balconies to the streets, from the streets to passageways, and even sightlines from windows.

KEY FIGURES

  • 1.5 hectares
  • 650 linear meters of roadway
  • 172 meters of boulevard
  • 730 linear meters of façades
  • 57 façades, 12 meters high
  • 47 doors
  • 592 windows

A PURPOSEFULLY SYNTHETIC, TIMELESS, AND ADAPTABLE BACKLOT

TIMELESSNESS

A distilled essence of the Parisian spirit, designed to accommodate all types of films across various time periods.

  • Wherever you are on set, you’re in Paris!
  • It supports all genres: comedy, action, genre films, and more.
  • Any era is possible, from the late 19th century to the present day.
  • Each production has the freedom to customize street furniture to match different historical periods.

NEUTRALITY

Each director has the freedom to utilize the set as a foundation of Parisian elevations, allowing them to craft the unique world of their film.

  • The façades are deliberately kept neutral, offering every project the opportunity for bespoke customization.
  • This neutrality makes it easy to adapt the set for various types of productions, whether for film, television, commercials, or events.

MODULARITY AND ADAPTABILITY

TSF Backlot Paris Streets offers spaces that cater to all types and sizes of productions. This flexibility allows every project to fully embrace and endlessly customize this production tool.

  • For example, the Grand Boulevard is ideal for large-scale scenes and establishment shots,
  • Smaller and more intimate streets are perfect for projects with focused scenes that don’t require full set dressing of the entire Paris Streets Backlot.

Some façades can be adapted to suit different themes: for example, a mansion can be transformed into an embassy, a large carriage door can become the entrance to a hospital or the exit of a fire station, and so on.

  • The elevation changes with the metro stairs and esplanade add an interesting cinematic dimension for various scenes.
  • The existing structures behind the sets can be used as double facades to create new exteriors or interior courtyards.
  • There is also the possibility of building apartments or shops behind the façades, using the streets as animated backdrops filled with Parisian atmosphere.
  • The balconies (fully functional), interior platforms, and passageways, which allow lighting access to the windows, along with interior staircases, offer a variety of spaces and angles that can be utilized for different script needs.

RICHNESS AND VARIETY OF SHOTS AND SET DISCOVERIES

The entire Paris Streets set has been designed to meet a wide range of needs: from the layout of the streets and avenues, to the façades, doors, windows, balconies, metro entrance, and staircases.

Specific Features of the PARIS STREETS BACKLOT

  • Metro entrance: The pit is accessible from the stairs. The metro entrance can be sealed off to optimize or transform the space (for terraces, markets, etc.).
  • Balconies: All balconies are functional, allowing varied viewpoints and additional shooting angles.
  • Access to each level via covered walkways: For set design and technical work.
  • Practicable windows and doors on request: All doors and windows can be opened. For safety reasons, these openings are made upon request.
  • Electrical installations beneath the sidewalks: Power is available for streetlights and any set dressing or props.
  • Neutral spaces and solid walls: These areas are available for construction, accessorizing, or transforming to fit a specific time period or scenario.
  • Montmartre-style staircase: Leading to a terrace and a first-floor building, creating street elevation changes.
  • A block of buildings that can be customized inside to enable 360-degree shooting possibilities.
  • Open spaces at the ends of streets and boulevards: These areas can be used for green screens or extended constructions, such as additional streets, Seine riverbanks, esplanades, or public buildings.
  • Technical rigging line at the top of façades: Suitable for hanging various elements, green screens, etc.
  • Cornice finishing: Designed to facilitate the attachment of tracking points for VFX work.

SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

The structures are permanent, designed to avoid the repeated cycle of building and tearing down sets. The PARIS STREETS BACKLOT provides a solid foundation, reducing the need to construct large-scale sets for each new production.

The use of modular materials like wood and durable materials such as plaster ensures the set can be utilized for multiple years.

The infrastructure of the buildings and workspaces allows productions to focus on customizing their sets, thereby saving time and resources.

A VAST 30-HECTARE OUTDOOR SPACE

Beyond the Paris Streets Backlot and the upcoming 20,000 square meters of studios, TSF STUDIOS 77 also offers a vast 30-hectare area available for creating unique outdoor sets.

These outdoor spaces provide complete creative freedom, open horizons, a noise-free environment, total confidentiality, and secure outdoor filming, including for VFX work. Located on a former airbase, the site also features numerous taxiways.

Additionally, these spaces have access to the full range of Studios 77 facilities: offices, water, electricity, electric vehicles, and more.
